Medieval Christianity
Controversy between king and pope flourished because of the lay investiture, which is the practice where secular rulers choose nominees for the church office and give them their office symbol. The controversy led to a reform of papacy. Once Pope Innocent III entered papacy, political power for the Catholic Church reached its highest point. New religious orders were established, even those including women. These orders made a big impact in the lives of Medieval Europe in good and bad ways. Church, possessing much power at the time, created a court to punish those who were thought to go against the Church's teachings. The Church in the High Middle Ages also made an important impact for the people's lives from birth until death.

The Crusades
The Crusades began because the Byzantine Emperor, Alexius I, who was a Christian asked the Europeans for help against the Muslim Turks. Many Italian port cities became more powerful and rich because of the Crusades. The Muslims and Christians fought for the territory of Jerusalem, but the Muslim Emperor, Saladin, finally gained power over the Holy Land. The Crusaders were able to weaken the Byzantine Empire by conquering Constantinople. The Crusades with a combination of the Black Death later on lead to the breakdown of feudalism.

1. How did the Black Death spread so quickly and killed so many?
2. Why were the Jews the ones blamed for most wrong doings?
3. Why would two countries spend more than one-hundred years fighting for a small piece of land?
4. How much did universities improve the people's education?
5. Did anyone go against Joan of Arc's doings because she was a woman?
